ESD energy chains

ESD energy chains are energy supply systems for preventing electrostatic charges during the manufacturing processes of electronic components or assemblies. They protect sensitive electronics from damage caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Working with the PTB (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt) in Braunschweig, igus SE & Co. KG took measurements of the electrical surface leakage resistance for igus energy chains with the special material igumid GC back in 1992. More certifications were added in 1998 and 1999 according to DIN 53482 and the ZH1/200 guidelines for static electricity by the Federation of Trade Associations.

    ESD testing in the igus laboratory

    igus recommends the material igumid ESD for applications in the production of sensitive electrical components and in potentially explosive environments (ATEX) to dissipate potentially occurring electrostatic energy.

    igumid ESD even surpasses the standard material igumid G regarding some mechanical requirements and has been tested with over 10 million cycles in the igus technical centre.

    Please note: according to a statement by TÜV Rheinland 557/Ex 125071309.00/17, igus energy chains do not fall under the scope of guideline 2014/34/EU

    Further information

    These additional operating instructions apply to our ESD energy chains in the grey (similar to RAL 7015). They supplement the assembly instructions for standard energy chains and the details in the catalogue. These instructions only contain data relating to the ESD area. The technical specifications of the assembly instructions for standard energy chains and the catalogue details still apply unless they are excluded or replaced by these instructions.

    Regarding assembly, removal and installation, please follow the instructions for the igus standard energy chains and the catalogue details to ensure trouble-free operation. igus ESD energy chains must be grounded with appropriate measures in accordance with drawing number 18392 to dissipate any occurring electrostatic charge. Assembly, installation, commissioning and maintenance may be performed only by personnel that is properly trained in explosion protection! Please also note the corresponding national safety regulations and the relevant national regulations in respect of explosion protection during installation and operation.

    Before commissioning, the correct installation must be checked in accordance with the assembly instructions for standard energy chains and the catalogue specifications. Particular attention is required concerning the correct earthing of the ESD energy chain.

    igus energy chains are maintenance-free*. The correct earthing of the energy chains has to be checked at regular intervals (*in the case of large projects, individual maintenance plans may be necessary and will be drawn up as required).

    Flying probe tester from SPEA

    Flying probe testers can be used to check printed circuit boards for faults after manufacture. Needles touch and measure the test items point by point at lightning speed to rule out short circuits on the circuit board. To ensure that the rapidly moving test heads are reliably supplied with power and data cables, SPEA's flying probe testers have been using conductive E2 micro ESD energy chains from igus for years.
